The Southern Park in the Baltic resort of Sopot has been named after Lech and Maria Kaczyński, the presidential couple killed in the plane crash in Russia three months ago.
The mayor of Sopot said during the ceremony that Lech Kaczyński was a great politician and statesman, but for the residents of Sopot, he, and his wife Maria, were first and foremost as neighbours, who will be always remembered as very special people.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled by their daughter, Marta, who said that even though her parents were not born in Sopot, they spent over twenty five years there and planned to return to the town after retirement. ‘In fact, they have never moved out from Sopot and, with this park dedicated to their memory, they are now back here’, she said.
Established almost 200 years ago and recently thoroughly renovated, the Southern Park extends along the seafront and is one of the most beautiful spots in Sopot. (mk)
