• Water curtains cool off Warsaw citizens
  • 14.07.2010

Soaring temperatures throughout Poland have led authorities in Warsaw to install a dozen water curtains throughout the city to allow people to cool off from the heat.

Water curtains are generally used by fire rescue teams to separate areas from fire, but with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees Celsius, the 4 metre curtain of water has found a new use.

12 of the machines are to be placed around Warsaw, and are to operate between 10 am – 6 pm in the city’s busiest areas during the ongoing heatwave.

The coolers will be positioned on Zamkowy Square in Warsaw’s Old Town, as well as in the Old Town Square, by the Copernicus Memorial on Krakowskie Przedmiescie, as well on the Bankowy, Konstytucji and Trzech Krzyzy Squares.

Two of the water curtains, which use around 3,000 litres of water per hour each, will also be left to the disposal of commuters, being placed by the central Swietokrzyskie and Centrum metro stations.

Other cities are to follow suit after Warsaw’s move. Both the south-western Wroclaw and north-western Szczecin, where temperatures have soared to 37 degrees Celsius, will have water curtains installed this week.

Forecasts for the country still show temperatures rocketing into the 30s, with sun expected throughout Poland, with some localised thunderstorms possibly occuring on Wednesday night and Thursday. (jb)
