Today marks the first death anniversary of one of the greatest modern-age Polish philosophers, Professor Leszek Kolakowski.
Kolakowski’s main scope of interest included the history of philosophy and the history of religious ideas. He published over 400 works, among them 30 books, throughout his career, and his most renowned publications include Main Currents of Marxism, Conversations with the Devil, and The Presence of Myth.
Professor Kolakowski would often say that engaging in philosophy never produced indisputable conclusions. The professor believed that philosophical deliberations were not about posing questions, but also considering the answers.
“It is crucial to think about important matters, even if you haven’t a chance to bring about satisfactory results. The sole reflection on significant questions is key to our culture,” said Kolakowski.
For many years, Leszek Kolakowski was a member of the Communist Party, from which he was dismissed in 1966 due to his political views and criticism of the authorities. He left Poland in 1968, following his removal from the University of Warsaw for supporting protesting students. He lived in England since 1970, and delivered lectures at Oxford University, and also overseas, at Yale and Berkley.
