• Maverick MP to be kicked out of Civic Platform?
  • 19.07.2010

On 6 August, Civic Platform’s peer court will rule whether or not to kick out maverick MP, Janusz Palikot, from the party.

At the same time the court will consider a motion filed by Palikot’s friend, Stanislaw Zmijan, to punish MEP Filip Kaczmarek who wants the controversial Civic Platform MP to be removed from the party for “unethical and disgraceful” statements about President Lech Kaczynski. Kaczmarek is referring to statements made by Palikot in which he said that it should be investigated as to whether or not the late president was sober while boarding TU-154, which crashed near Smolensk on 10 April.

Stanislaw Zmijan thinks that by filing the motion against Palikot, the MEP breached party rules and acted to the detriment of the party. Zmijan quotes statistical data which show that Civic Platform in the eastern region of Lubelszczyzna has gained significant support under Palikot. The city of Lublin, located in the region, however, was the only city in Poland where the opposition Law and Justice candidate for president Jaroslaw Kaczynski won elections defeating Civic Platform’s Bronislaw Komorowski.
