The new weapon being introduced to combat the plague of mosquitoes following this Spring’s floods are bats.
The Silesian district of Lelow, southern Poland, has invested in 50 homes for bats, which can eat up to 2,000 insects in a day. The bat boxes, constructed according to instructions from chiropterologists (bat researchers) are being sold to local residents for a symbolic price of 1 zloty (about 25 euro cents).
The boxes can be mounted in gardens, orchards or in barns. The first batch of bat homes distributed by local authorities was already snapped up.
Other localities are fighting the mosquitoes with the help of chemical spraying but – unlike the bat method – this can be applied only under certain conditions or in specific locations. (ek/mmj)
