• Six months community service for “disrespect” of late presidential couple
  • 21.07.2010

A 22-year-old girl in Poland’s southern city of Krakow has been handed a sentence of six months community service for “disrespecting the place of remembrance of the late President Lech Kaczynski.”

On April 20, the 22-year-old and a friend, also a woman, were caught in Krakow’s Main Market Square after they were noticed kicking over candles and scattering flowers left there by mourners who had come to the city for the presidential couple’s funeral a couple of days earlier, on April 18.

A security guard took the young women to a local police station, where it was determined that both of the offenders were drunk.

The chief offender, Halina S., was today sentenced by a district court in Krakow for 180 hours community service, and has been ordered to pay costs amounting to 200 zloty (50 euro). Her accomplice is yet to stand trial. (jb)
