A new promotional logo for the southern city of Nowy Sacz has enraged some residents, being associated with palmistry and Satanism.
The logo itself is a colourful symbol of a palm with a black spot in the middle. The sign is representative of the layout of the old town of Nowy Sacz, with the black spot denoting the Town Hall at the centre of the market square.
The town’s slogan, “Nowy Sacz gives you good fortune,” has been slammed by the local pastoral youth ministry, which has demanded that the offending slogan and logo be changed.
The pastoral ministry has explained the reasons for its outrage as being that the Church does not allow for fortune-telling, and that a black spot in the centre of a palm symbolises the authority of the devil over the individual.
The logo of the hand is coloured in a rainbow theme, which also gives way to gay symbolism, and has also been chastised by the local ministry.
Mayor of Nowy Sacz, Ryszard Nowak has defended the symbol, saying that “an open right hand is the international symbol of goodwill and agreement, and the rainbow colouring of the hand is a sign of the town’s multiculturalism.”
The north-eastern town of Bialystok had a similar experience two years ago, when a new logo designed for the town was similar to a New York gay-rights organisation. Even though the design was not deemed by lawyers to be a copy, local authorities there decided not to employ the logo. (jb)
