One of Poland’s best known canines, the rescue dog Ira, died at her retirement home with a Gdansk fireman.
Ira made the headlines when the late President Lech Kaczynski misheard her name and called her “Ira-sit”.
Ira had suffered from serious spinal problems and went through surgery a year ago when her back legs were struck by paralysis.
Afterwards she moved with the help of a special cart. The German shepherd had been a rescuer with the firefighters in Gdansk for ten years, and the laureate of many prizes for saving lives, including “Professional Dog Hero” in 2009. (ek/jb)
