• Tourist stumbles across WW II mine in northern Poland
  • 26.07.2010

Polish navy sappers have removed an unexploded German mine dating back from WW2, discovered on a beach at Dziwnów, north-west Poland.

The mine was found by a tourist strolling along the seashore. He alerted police, who in turn notified the sappers unit from nearby Świnoujście.

The unit arrived on the spot within thirty minutes to secure and disable the mine, which was then transported to a military site to be safely detonated.

In the meantime the area, a popular tourist spot, was cordoned off by police.

During the Second World War the Baltic coast saw heavy fighting. It is possible that there are many unexploded bombs still buried in the sand at and in the vicinity of the seashore. (ek/pg)
