Floods in May. Photo - east newsResidents of Wilkow, eastern Poland, hit by catastrophic floods last May and June, are suing the government in Warsaw for damages.
The residents are supported by the “Together Against” foundation, which is collecting evidence and flood documentation for the group’s lawsuit.
“We want the government to work out a social assistance program, which would enable us to restart agricultural production and ensure financial aid for at least four years,” head councilor in the town, Grzegorz Tarasinski told Polish Radio.
The authorities of the eastern Lublin province are rejecting charges that they did not ensure sufficient flood protection for the people of Wilkow. Director of the water facilities unit Stanislaw Jakimiuk claims that the accusations are unfounded.
“We have done all that we could. We invested money into the construction of embankments. A total of 17 kilometers of dykes were built in the Vistula River Valley,” he says. (kk/pg)
