Beaches in Swinoujscie, a popular spa and holiday resort in north-western Poland, have been closed after tests revealed microbiological contamination of the water.

On Saturday, a bathing site in the centre of the city was declared off limits after excessive amounts of e. coli and related bacteria were found in the water.

On Monday, similar bacteria as well as entercocci were found in another bathing site in the city. These bacteria cause serious food poisoning as well as infections of the urinary tract and other problems. The source of the contamination has not been found yet. (kk)
