The Zygmuntówka, Warsaw’s new flagship pastry to take over from the communist-era has failed to titillate local taste buds.
The cake won last year’s citywide competition for a cake which was to supersede the wuzetka, the communist-era pastry considered outdated by the city hall, the initiator of the contest.
Initially a hit, the Zygmuntówka has, in time, failed to garner great popularity. Confectioners quoted by the local Życie Warszawy newspaper claim the product is rarely picked by customers. Meanwhile, the manufacture of the delicacy is a costly undertaking, and its transport and distribution a difficult task.
Marketing specialists point to a lack of a promotion strategy as the main reason behind flagging popularity. There are no ads endorsing the pastry, and it may not be found in every confectionery in the capital. All this has contributed to the fact that the old wuzetka has not been dethroned and still reigns supreme in the capital, claim the specialists. (ab)
