As the people of Bogatynia and Zgorzelec in southwestern Poland are struggling with the damage caused by recent flooding which killed four people, the lower and upper house of Parliament held an emergency meeting, Thursday, to amend a “flood law” facilitating fast financial aid to flow to victims.
Summoned to Warsaw from vacations, MPs approved regulations, thanks to which the people of Bogatynia and Zgorzelec will receive the same kind of emergency aid as those who were affected by flooding in May and June – one-off benefits of up to 6,000 zlotys (1,500 euro) and up to 100,000 zlotys (25,000 euro) for repairs or rebuilding their damaged homes. The government aid covers both individual people as well as businesses and local governments.
A total of over 2 billion zlotys have been set aside in this year’s budget for removing the results of floods and related catastrophes, the premier’s chief adviser Michal Boni said. In the autumn, money will also flow from the European Solidarity Fund.
Bogatynia and Zgorzelec flood victims are still reeling in shock from the scope of the damaged caused the torrential rains. Helped by soldiers, they set about removing the damages. (kk)
