• Police clear out Defenders of the Cross
  • 14.08.2010

Police have removed protestors from the direct vicinity of the disputed Smolensk Cross outside the Presidential Palace in preparation for Army Day celebrations in Warsaw.

The police took the action, early Saturday morning at the request of Poland’s government protection unit (BOR).

Police were both cheered and jeered as they cleared the area around the cross and put up barriers to keep people away from the area.

The cross, however, remains in place.

A forwork display will take place in the area over the weekend as part of Armed Forces day celebrations on August 15 which takes place every year in remembrance of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, when Polush forces defeated Trotsky’s red Army. (pg)
