It has been reported that the “Moniuszko” police computer systems were off-line due to a glitch lasting 10 days, leaving Poland’s security services defenceless.
The systems, which are used to tap mobile telephone calls as well as support operations carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau, hampered search efforts of a missing teenager in Sopot, among other problems.
According to media reports, this is not the first time that the “Moniuszko” systems have crashed, although the 10-day freeze is the longest yet.
Anonymous high-ranking police officers have confirmed the crash, saying that the system “is trash” and that the effects of the poorly constructed programme “will haunt [the police] for years to come.”
The “Moniuszko” defence system allegedly cost the police force 10-14 million zloty (2.5-3.5 million euro), and was constructed by an Israeli firm, chosen without official tender procedures.
The system is supposed to have been part constructed by a company belonging to “one of Poland’s richest” businessmen. When asked by journalists on the “Moniuszko” system, however, the company refused to comment, denying any involvement. (jb)
