Around 50 centimetres of snow has fallen on Kasprowy Wierch in the southern Polish Tatra mountains, marking the end of the summer season.
Kasprowy Wierch, which lies some 1987 metres above sea level, saw freezing temperatures with snowfall reportedly reaching “knee height”.
Despite the freak snowfall, tourists are not complaining. “It’s hard to believe, but it is […] absolutely beautiful,” one hiker told the TVN24 news channel.
600 metres lower on Turbacz, a 1310 metre peak in the Gorce National Park, the recorded temperature currently stands at 5 degrees Celsius with rainfall.
The weather comes as most of southern Poland is covered by thick cloud and continuing rainfall, causing some local authorities to issue flood alerts in the Silesian region, including highland towns such as Bielsko-Biala and Zywiec. (jb)
