• Floods threaten southern Poland
  • 01.09.2010

The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMiGW) warns that in some regions of Poland up to 100 mm [corrected] of rain may fall in just 24 or 36 hours over Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to danger of flooding in some areas.

Areas near the Vistula and Oder river tributaries are particularly at risk.

“Water may rise above emergency levels in Dunajec, Wisloka, Raba, Nysa Luzycka and other rivers,” says Mieczyslaw Ostojski from IMiGW.

Torrential rains are expected in the central region of Mazovia, eastern region of Lublin, and southern regions of Silesia, Lower Silesia, Lower Carpathian and Lesser Poland. Emergency services have already warned local authorities about the flood threat.

“Flooding is quite a common phenomenon in our temperate zone at this time of the year. Poland experienced heavy floods in 1925, 1934, 1940 and 1980,” said Ostojski. “When a summer is rainy, the ground is soaked with water and every times it rains there’

s a possibility that there will be floods,” added the meteorologist.

The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMiGW) warns that rains will continue until 2 to 3 September. Warm weather is expected at the end of the week. (mg)
