Up to 200 communist-era crime cases may be discontinued in Poland after a Supreme Court ruling.
In August, the Supreme Court put a stop to a case in which two communist policemen, Jan D. and Janusz N. were charged for taking repressive measures against workers who staged a protest in Radom in 1976. The court ruled that the case was unconstitutional.
The Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) - which examines communist and Nazi era crimes - warns that the Supreme Court’s ruling may set a precedent for discontinuing at least 20 percent of communism-related cases currently being investigated by the institute, except murder and manslaughter cases.
A classified list of 200 cases which might be discontinued includes the murder of priest Jerzy Popieluszko, Solidarity chaplain, of Stanislaw Pyjas, member of the anti-communist student movement and Grzegorz Przemyk, son of an oppositionist. (mg)
