A pygmy hippopotamus has been born in the Wroclaw Zoo.
Much to the joy of the zoo’s authorities the animal is a male. The pygmy hippopotamus is an endangered species and is native to the forests and swamps of western Africa, where only some three thousand animals still live in the wilderness.
There are some 90 animals living in zoological gardens around Europe and only 30 are male, that is why the young hippo from the Wroclaw Zoo has already a future planned for him.
When reaching appropriate age the hippo will be travelling throughout Europe helping in ensuring the continuity of his species.
Meanwhile the big eyed whelp is investigating life in the Wroclaw Zoo. The zoo’s authorities have announced a competition to find an appropriate name for the hippo. (ab)
