President Bronislaw Komorowski wants to fly a helicopter back and forth to the Presidential Palace in order not to cause more traffic chaos in Warsaw.

The newly elected president will use a heliport on the roof of the National Security Bureau, situated next to the Presidential Palace to park his chopper.

The heliport was opened in 2005 but former president, the late Lech Kaczynski who died in the 10 April Smolensk plane crash, did not want to use it.

Instead, he was transported from Frederic Chopin’s Airport to the Presidential Palace in a limo, which added to travel time, was more expensive because officers from the Government Protection Bureau had to escort him and burdensome for citizens of Warsaw as the presidential motorcade usually caused traffic jams.

The Chancellery of the President will equip the heliport with brand-new navigation systems.

Currently the heliport is used by air ambulances as there is a maternity hospital nearby. (mg)
