• Arm transplant success for Polish clinic
  • 17.09.2010

Surgeons in the south-western town of Trzebnica have transplanted an arm onto a 56 year-old woman.

This is the seventh transplant of a limb performed in this hospital and the second of an entire arm. So far, four such transplants have been carried out globally.

Doctors from the hospital reported that surgery lasted 20 hours and the patient was recovering “surprisingly fast”. The woman had lost her arm in a car accident three years ago. The donor of the limb was also female.

Over the course of four years, the hospital in Trzebnica has become the first clinic in the world to specialise in transplants of this kind. So far, out of four arm transplants globally, two have been performed in the south-western Polish town. (ek/jb)
