• Citizens denied public information?
  • 21.09.2010

A new report shows that public insitutions are not keen on disclosing their modes of operation, including spending, despite a citizen’s right to such information.

Theoretically it is possible for a Polish citizen to ask a hospital how it cleans its wards or how a school buys books for its library.

However, a report drafted by the non-governmental Centre for Public Information states that such institutions are not keen on supplying such data.

Out of 386 requests for information sent out to various institutions in 108 towns, up to 73 percent were neglected.

Municipal and local councils were the most eager to comply with the requests, with 40 percent of requests being responded to.

Hospitals answered only 13 percent of the questionnaires, although none of them responded on their cleaning modus operandi.

Only 7 percent of schools responded to requests as to how they purchased books and newspapers for their libraries. (jb)
