• Council worker delivers baby outside office

An employee of the Bemowo district council office in Warsaw had to act as a midwife when a woman started giving birth in front of the office building.

“I haven’t delivered a baby for fifteen years,” Barbara, a council worker and a former midwife told a private TV station.

The pregnant woman was on the way to hospital but got stuck in a traffic jam.

“A colleague told me that a woman is giving birth in a car parked outside the office so I grabbed some gloves and ran to the car. I didn’t even have time to put the gloves on because the woman was already delivering when I reached the car,” says Barbara.

“When the baby was born I asked someone to bring a piece of string so that I could tie up an umbilical cord. Then I cut the cord off and wrapped the baby with a towel to protect him against cold,” adds Barbara.

A group of people assisted the childbirth. Women tried to calm the pregnant woman down, stroked her head and held their hand. “There were no complications during the childbirth. The baby boy is big and healthy. He weighs about 4 kilo,” says Barbara. After the birth, the mother and the boy were taken to hospital. Both are feeling well. (mg)
