• Maverick to set up new left liberal party?
  • 24.09.2010

Janusz Palikot, a maverick Civic Platform politician known for making outlandish statements, awaits judgment on his possible exclusion from party ranks after being reprimanded by a parliamentary ethics committee over the summer.

Meanwhile, Palikot is reported to have decided on his own fate in Civic Platform, regardless of the party’s ‘court’ verdict, and is to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk to announce his decision.

Palikot is set to announce his move publicly in the opening days of October, after a congress of his supporters takes place. Earlier, the eccentric politician also said he would not inform the public on his decision until he had met with Tusk.

Asked by TVN24 on the political scope of his movement, Janusz Palikot replied that “The aim of the ‘Modern Poland’ [Nowoczesna Polska] movement is to crush the Democratic Left Alliance, and lightly pick at Civic Platform,” which may suggest that the party will be from the liberal left if formed.

Speaking to Polish Radio on Friday morning, Parliamentary Speaker and former party leader Grzegorz Schetyna acknowledged that if Janusz Palikot wants to persue his political interests in a “controversial” way, he should do it alone. (jb)
