A new plan by Warsaw president Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz envisages the restoration of 32 kilometres of Vistula banks in the district of Praga.
The plan was signed with the National Environment Protection Fund, and will mean “one hundred species of bird will return” to the site, including terns, gulls and other species, with reports stating the birds will return within four years to the Vistula bank.
The environmental plan envisages the construction of new islets that are to serve as brooding grounds. Warsaw president Gronkiewicz-Waltz added that the plan is of a complex nature, and will also serve to protect the birds’ nests from prey.
Educational programmes are set to accompany the plan, as well as the placing of information signs around the protected areas.
The environmental agreement was signed to the tune of 15 million zloty (around 3.8 million euro), and is part funded by the European Commission. (jb)
