- Town braces for more flooding
- 28.09.2010
Several schools have been closed as a precaution against flooding in Bogatynia in the southwest of Poland, which was badly devastated after the August floods.
Flood alerts have been announced in five localities in Lower Silesia after several local rivers, including Nysa Luzycka, Bystrzyca and Sieniawka, exceed emergency levels, according to the Crisis Management Centre in Wroclaw.
The whole Zgorzelec county has been affected by rising water levels after heavy rains over night.
In Bogatynia, the river overflowed embankments.
“The streets of Daszynskiego and Zgorzelecka have been flooded,” says mayor of Bogatynia Adam Grzmielewicz. Several schools in the area have been closed.
“The rain does not immediately threaten the town, but we’ll see what happens in the next few hours,” Grzmielewicz told the PAP news agency.
Seven people have been evacuated from the Uniejowice village after landslides caused by the rain.
“It’s still raining but the rain is less heavy than yesterday and water levels do not rise so quickly,” says the Crisis Management Centre.
Meteorologists predict that rainfall will become less intense at the end of the week. (mg)
