- Poles want more women in politics
- 29.09.2010
Almost half of Poles think that more women should be involved in politics, according to a new survey.
Forty seven percent of Poles told the CBOS opinion pollsters that women should be more active in politics; one third think that the number of men and women on the Polish political stage is just about right and every fifth respondent said that it does not matter what gender a politician is.
According to the poll, over a half of Poles support a draft bill on quotas, which would give women more seats in Parliament. Every second Pole thinks that certain steps should be taken to enlarge the number of female representation in politics.
Most respondents told the pollster that women should be encouraged to run in elections and take higher posts in public institutions.
Every eighth respondent said that the rise of the number of women in politics should be a natural process and not interfered with by politicians.
Women take up just around 20 percent of seats in the lower house of parliament (Sejm) and just 10 percent in the Senate.
The survey was conducted on 5-11 August among 986 people. (mg)
