The National Security Council will discuss safety procedures concerning the air transportation of Poland’s top officials following the Smolensk air crash which claimed 96 of Poland’s political and military elite.

The council (BBN) wants to introduce new regulations according to which four top state officials – President, Prime Minister, Sejm and Senate Speakers – under no circumstances should be allowed to fly together.

None of the four officials should be accompanied by more than three subordinates in one plane, says the proposal.

The National Security Council decided to introduce new safety measures after the crash of Tu-154 in April in which Poland’s president Lech Kaczynski and 95 top state officials and military commanders were killed.

The Council, which was appointed by President Bronislaw Komorowski, includes Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Deputy PM Waldemar Pawlak, head of the National Security Bureau Stanislaw Koziej, Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz, Defence Minister Bogdan Klich, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Interior Minister Jerzy Miller, leader of the opposition Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski (who said he would not participate in the meeting) and leader of the Democratic Left Alliance Grzegorz Napieralski.

Grzegorz Schetyna, Sejm Speaker will be appointed to the Council today. (mg)
