• Three years behind bars for abusive text messages
  • 19.10.2010

The government is expected to pass a bill today which could see persistent stalkers becoming liable for up to three years’ imprisonment for abusive messaging.

Earlier this year, a report drafted by the Institute of Justice and commissioned by the government showed that millions of Poles are victims of harassment due to abusive e-mails, text messages, or posts on internet forums from unwanted admirers or troublesome neighbours.

“New technologies have spurred on these social matters with grave consequences,” Professor Andrzej Zoll, former head of the Legislative Council has said.

Both men and women are affected by abusive messages from anonymous stalkers, usually ex-lovers, neighbours, patients or even work colleagues. (jb)
