• Archbishop of Warsaw to become cardinal?

Archbishop Nycz

Italian media reveal that today Pope Benedict XVI will announce the names of newly appointed cardinals, at least one of whom is certain to be from Poland.

Archbishop of Warsaw Kazimierz Nycz is among the candidates.

The Pope will announce the third consistory, a special meeting during which cardinals are appointed, since the beginning of his pontificate. The first one took place in March 2006 and the second in November 2007.

Since then, the number of cardinals who are under 80 years old and are entitled to participate in the conclave has dropped from 120 to 102. However, Pope Benedict XVI will probably appoint even older ecclesiastical officials to the cardinal dignity in order to reward their service to the Church.

It is almost certain that Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz will become a member of the College of Cardinals, wrote Italian journalists.

The Archbishop of Warsaw did not receive a cardinalate because his predecessor Cardinal Jozef Glemp was under 80 years old at the time of consistory. (mg)
