Following the attack and murder of a political assistant in the Lodz offices of Law and Justice party last week, the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) has announced that it wants a complete ban on firearms in Poland.
The project drawn up by the leftist party, led by Grzegorz Napieralski, aims to allow only sports clubs and hunting associations to purchase weapons, forbidding their sale to private individuals.
Meanwhile, politicians are debating two projects as part of the parliamentary ‘Friendly State’ commission on combating bureaucracy in the country.
On the day of the attack, last Tuesday, MPs in the commission voted on the liberalisation on the purchase of guns via the Internet, and that gun licences are not necessary when buying firearms (or replicas) which were manufactured before 1885.
The project drawn up by the ‘Friendly State’ commission may also envisage easier access to guns. If the resulting legislation were passed, anyone who is deemed to be psychologically healthy and passes a theoretical and practical exam, is over 21, has permanent residence in Poland and has not deliberately committed a crime may apply for a gun licence.
