• Leftist leader writes to Polish clerics on IVF
  • 27.10.2010

In the ongoing debate on in-vitro fertilisation, the head of the Democratic Left Alliance, Grzegorz Napieralski has written an open letter to the Polish Episcopate.

The letter writes that the State cannot replace the Church in its duties, and that difficult issues need reasoning and compromise.

“We ask [the Episcopate] not to expect that we give in to verbal and institutional pressure,” Napieralski’s letter underlines, adding that it would be wrong “for us to take away the right to happiness for people unable to have children, but wishing them.”

Slamming the Church for overuse of its voice in public debate, the leftist leader writes that “we cannot agree with the attack, harm, and humiliation of people who reach for in-vitro fertilisation in order to have children,” adding that the comparison of IVF to eugenics is “deeply unjustified.”

Grzegorz Napieralski concludes his letter by stating that IVF treatment is legal and has been in use for decades, ultimately asking bishops to lower their “authoritarian tone” and stop taking away the right for people to decide on their own fate. (jb)
