photo - PAP As families travel to cemeteries for All Saints weekend, 24 have died with 291 injured in 234 accidents on the roads in Poland. Police say they have arrested 930 for driving drunk. Around 15,000 officers are involved in ‘Operation Torch’ aimed at cutting down the yearly death toll on the roads over the long weekend.
Meanwhile, 24 of respondents in a poll especially commissioned for Polish Radio said they had in the past driven a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol.
The poll by the Homo Homini Institute also found that 74 percent of drivers took more care behind the wheel during special police operations, though one-in-five claimed an increased police presence on roads had little effect on their behaviour.
The survey was conducted by telephone on a representative group of 1,090 people on 29 October.
