A 52 meter high statue of Jesus Christ has been completed in Świebodzin, western Poland – dwarfing Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer by some 16 meters.
“This is the fulfillment of a life’s work,” said the statue’s creator, Father Sylwester Zawadzki.
The completion of the statue had to be put back a month after a failed attempt by a giant crane to put Jesus’ head onto the statue. The head fell from the statue, injuring a builder (the result can be seen in the video below).
The statue will be formally ‘unveiled’ on 21 November.
Dariusz Bekisz, mayor of Swiebodzin, was reported earlier to think that the statue will be a great tourist attraction. "More people will visit Świebodzin and leave their money,” he said. (pg)
