The 700 years old ‘Napoleon’s oak’ in western Poland has been burned down by vandals.

The tree was Poland’s thickest oak with a circumference of over 10 meters.

Firemen called to the site were unable to save the valuable tree,  under which, as legend has it, Napoleon Bonaparte rested after crossing the Odra River during his march on Russia in 1812.

Vandals tried to burn the tree several times before, the last time being four years ago when “Napoleon”  lost half of its branches. (kk)
