Seven out of ten Poles give the thumbs up to the new law on banning smoking in public places, finds a new poll commissioned by Polish Radio.

Seventy two percent positively evaluate the law which came into force last Monday, according to the survey by the Homo Homini Institute, with 18 percent against.

Director of the Homo Homini Institute says that the ban on smoking in public places has been surprisingly well received by most Poles.

The survey also found that 60 percent of smokers support the ban and 76 percent of non-smokers.

It is estimated that one-in-four adults smoke in Poland.

The survey was conducted by telephone on 18 November from a representative sample of 2,000. (pg)
