  • 28.01.2011

Last year the population in Poland grew by around 38,000 but the average age increased – leading demographers to warn of an impending ‘demographic timebomb’.

At the end of last year, the population of Poland amounted to 38.2 million, according to the central statistical office (GUS). Population growth reached 0.1 percent, while in 2009 it was 0.08 percent.

The number of people in the so-called “unproductive age” – those over 60 years old for women and over 65 years old for men - also increased year-on- year.

In 2009, as many as 16.5 percent of population were pensioners, while in 2010 the number rose to 16.9 percent.  (mg)
