Lawyer Marcin Dubieniecki, husband of late president Lech Kaczynski's daughter Marta, has said that he has ambitions to join the European parliament as an MEP.

He ruled out standing in national elections, stating that the Polish parliament was “a circus” that “did not represent the interests of its citizens.”

Notably, Dubieniecki remarked that he “does not rule out” standing for the European parliament as a candidate for the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, founded by his late father-in-law and twin brother Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who still leads the party.

Dubieniecki's own father, Marek, is a former communist functionary who continues to work for the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), a party created by post communists.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski did not attend the marriage of his niece, a detail that prompted speculation in the press of a political rift within the family.

Dubieniecki has made outspoken remarks in the press since last April’s Smolensk disaster, postulating that the crash was not an accident but a Russian plot to kill the president. (nh)
