Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska, head of Poland Comes First, a centre-right breakaway party from Law and Justice, has called for a National Assembly on 10 April to commemorate the victims of the Smolensk catastrophe.

“We believe that there should be a gathering of the National Assembly [of both parliamentary houses], and that we should jointly commemorate the memory of the catastrophe’s victims,” Kluzik-Rostkowska told RMF radio, Tuesday morning.

The announcement comes after a poll at the weekend which stated that the majority of Poles want joint commemorations to mark the one year anniversary of the Smolensk crash, in which President Lech kaczynski and 95 other high-ranking officials died.

Meanwhile, Law and Justice has announced that it will not be taking part in any official state ceremony to mark the anniversary, which has been organised by the Presidential Chancellery. (jb)
