Police in Krakow have reported that there has been a break-in at the house of the late artist Jerzy Nowosielski, who passed away on Monday.

Officers believe that the robbery occurred between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Broken window panes mark the scene.

“Paintings have undoubtedly been stolen,” said Katarzyna Cislo of the Malopolska police.

“We still don't know exactly how many, and to what value, but we are contacting the family,” she added.

Nowosielski, one of Poland's most celebrated contemporary artists, was 88 when he passed away this week.

He will be laid to rest this Saturday in the Avenue of the Merited at the Rakowicki cemetery, Krakow's famed necropolis. (nh)
