• PM Tusk in Madrid for inter-governmental consultations
  • 10.03.2011
Prime Minister Donald Tusk is in Madrid, Thursday, for Polish-Spanish intergovernmental consultations.

The Polish cabinet head and his host Jose Luis Zapatero are discussing the ongoing situation of unrest in North Africa, with special focus on mass migration problems, and European affairs. They will also look ahead to the Friday Brussels summit and priorities of Poland’s EU presidency, starting in July.

Before his departure for Madrid, the Polish PM said the presidency will be a challenging task as one of the main problems is sure to be growing illegal immigration from North Africa to southern regions of Europe.

Donald Tusk assured Warsaw is fully aware of the potential burden posed by such massive wave of migration to Mediterranean countries, especially the smaller ones. Poland will be interested in a strong Union position and voice on the matter during its term, he added.

The government heads are also tackling issues of Polish-Spanish police and border service cooperation, joint actions in countering drug smuggling and terrorism.

Another area of the two Prime Ministers’ discussions are joint efforts on the EU forum aiming at offsetting effects of the global crisis. (ss/jb)
