An avalanche in one of the valleys of the High Tatras, southern Poland, killed three people, Sunday afternoon.

The three were part of a climbing team of seven. A Tatra Mountain Search and Rescue Team arrived at the scene soon after the avalanche occurred, and scoured the area with sniffer dogs.

One  member of the team was diagnosed as dead on the spot, while the two others were transported to hospital in Zakopane, where they died after extensive attempts by medics to reanimate them.

The incident occurred by the Koszysta Ridge, which separates the Waksmund and Panszczyca Valleys in the vicinity of the Krzyzne Pass.

No information was given about the remaining climbers. (jb)
