• Historic Krakow to gain modern hi-rises?
  • 14.03.2011
The southern city of Krakow’s surroundings may see the construction of the highest skyscrapers in Europe.

The project has been presented at the Krakow stand during at the Mapic International Real Estate Fair in Cannes.

The project, undertaken by Arkadiusz Nagiec, envisages two 311-metre high buildings, located 9 kilometres from the historic centre of Krakow. The architect also visualises a whole centre built around the two towers, including office buildings, apartments and shopping centres.

Although the project is presented at the Cannes fair, it does not have the full approval of Krakow authorities. Monika Piatkowska, who is an official representing the Krakow brand, says the idea cannot be put into practice since for the time being it does not run in line with the directives of the planned expansion of the city.

High skyscrapers in the vicinity of Krakow could threaten the city’s position on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. However, Piatkowska adds that courageous visions have to be discussed and should they fulfill all necessary requirements, then the city could look for investors. (ab/jb)
