Hungarian president Pal Schmitt arrived in Warsaw today with a two-day visit to Poland where he will be having talks with President Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

In Warsaw, President Schmitt unveiled a plaque commemorating Hungarian military support for Poland in the years 1919-1920 following its rebirth as a nation the year before, and tomorrow the Hungarian head of state goes on to Poznań in the west where together with Poland’s Bronisław Komorowski he will lead celebrations of the Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day on March 23.

A dominating subject of talks between President Schmitt and President Komorowski is the rotating EU presidency, now held by Hungary, which Poland takes over in July.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry has informed that Warsaw and Budapest have many joint presidency objectives, and mainly the Eastern Partnership project - involving promoting the EU’s eastern policy.

Both countries are also lobbying to preserve the financing of the Cohesion Fund on the existing level in the negotiations of the EU’s budget for 2014-2020. (ek)
