Former deputy prime minister and leader of the Selfdefence party Andrzej Lepper could face up to two years in prison today with the verdict in the sex affair case in the appeal court due, Wednesday.

Lepper and fellow party member Stanislaw Lyzwinski were convicted in February 2010, after claims of sexual exploitation of employees.

Lepper, who briefly served as deputy prime minister in Jaroslaw Kaczynski's coalition government in 2006, was sentenced to two years and three months, for providing employment in return for sexual favours, as well as trying to procure sex from another lady linked to the party.

His misdemeanours are alleged to have taken place in the years 2001-2002.

Lyzwinski, whose crimes purportedly occurred between 1999 and 2003, was accused of additional charges, including the rape of a Self Defence activist in his office in the town of Tomaszow Mazowiecki. He was sentenced to five years.

The appeal process was due to get underway last month, but it was stalled, owing to the alleged ill health of Lyzwinski.

Both men plead not guilty. The proceedings of the trial are closed to the press. (nh/pg)
