A former intelligence officer who was obliged to resign after his pictures were pasted across the media in 2009 is set to run for parliament.

Public broadcasters TVP revealed today that Tomasz Kaczmarek (pictured left), known in the media as Agent Tomek, will be fighting for a seat under the banner of the Law and Justice party. His theoretical constituency would be in the south-western Lower Silesia region.

Kaczmarek became a household name owing to his widely publicised role in stings on two high profile women. He is alleged to have seduced former TV host, Weronika Marczuk-Pazura, during an investigation into her having taken bribes.

Similar allegations were made concerning Beata Sawicka, a former MP for the Civic Platform party, who was likewise embroiled in a corruption affair.

Kaczmarek was obliged to take early retirement after his identity was revealed. However, in recent times, he has been sighted as part of the security team of Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Kaczmarek accompanied the Law and Justice leader when he laid flowers outside the presidential palace last month on the eleven month anniversary of the Smolensk anniversary. Now, his close links to Kaczynski appear to be opening up new avenues.

From the outset, former colleagues of Kaczmarek have tried to dispel the sensationalism around his playboy image.

In 2009, Mariusz Kaminski, his former boss, described Kaczmarek as “a highly professional and experienced officer who has conducted special operations aimed at combating organised crime and drug trafficking.” (nh/jb)
