About 300 people working in the medical profession joined forces today in a protest outside parliament in Warsaw to decry what they claim is deteriorating conditions in Poland’s hospitals.

The action, which was organised by the Solidarity trade union, follows on from a hunger strike by nurses last month after the government attempted to push through new laws allowing hospitals to hire employees on temporary labour contracts, rather than full-time ones.

Representatives of the Union of Nurses and Midwives were also present during today's protest.

Demonstrators argue that under the pending laws, hospitals will be more concerned with profits than looking after their staff and patients.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Ewa Kopacz – a hate figure amongst the protesters, as evidenced by today's banners – holds that the demonstrators do not represent all of their professions and that they are alarming the public unnecessarily. (nh)
