Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has begun a one-day visit to London where he will meet with his British counterpart David Cameron.

Top of the agenda is Poland’s forthcoming presidency of the European Union – which begins on 1 July – as well as over-arching plans for the EU budget for the years 2014-2020.

Before the visit, government spokesman Pawel Gras said that the matter of refugees fleeing North Africa will also be a key subject during the talks.

“This is a subject that has become a matter of burning importance, and not only for the countries of southern Europe,” Gras affirmed.

Tusk was due to fly to London in March, but the escalation of problems in Libya prompted the Polish prime minister to postpone the meeting.

Today’s visit presents Poland with an opportunity to strengthen ties with the UK. The two countries are amongst a group of nine that have signed an appeal calling for more liberal economic reforms within the structures of the EU. (nh/jb)
