• Polish bison hungry for Hungarian mate

Four female bison from the Bialowieza Primeval Forest are to be sent to Hungary to get it on with Hungarian bulls and help restore the European bison population.

The bison will be transported to a breeding centre in the Hungarian village of Liso.

“The aim of the trip is to spread the population throughout Europe, where bison is in danger of becoming an extinct species,” Zdzislaw Szkiruc, director of the Bialowieza National Park told the TVN private TV station.

European bison are a cross breed of seven types of the animal. “It’s difficult to find a cross breed which would ensure genetic diversity, so it’s important to spread the population to other countries,” adds Szkiruc.

Sending lady bison, or cows, abroad to meet bullish bison has been going on for thirty years now.  In the last three decades, more than 500 young bison were sent abroad to save the decreasing population. (mg/pg)
