• Nazi POW camp discovered in north east Poland
  • 20.04.2011

The remains of a German Nazi prisoner-of-war camp dating back to World War II have been discovered in the northern city of Olsztynek, alongside the new A7 motorway.

During road works bulldozers uncovered numerous mess tins, shoes, trousers and epaulets which belonged to soldiers imprisoned in one of the biggest prisoner-of-war camps.

“During World War II the Nazis held over 650,000 war prisoners from France, Belgium, Italy, Serbia and the USSR there,” says archeologist Antoni Smolinski.

The regional monuments conservator will decide whether to continue road works at A7 motorway or re-mark it to preserve the camp site. (mg)
